This is not one of has a problem…
Speaking toThe Verge, an Apple spokesperson said the company is aware of a ‘crackling’ fault in the iPhone 8’s earpiece which disrupts audio during phone and FaceTime calls. The consequence is there’s currently little ‘phone’ about this new iPhone.
Apple's iPhone 8 (right) and possibly iPhone 8 Plus (left) have a problem.
AppleThe good news is Apple said “Our team is at work on a fix, which will be included in an upcoming software release”, though it declined to provide a more precise timescale.
Interestingly Apple said it believes only a “small number” of iPhone 8s are affected, but with numerous complaints from affected iPhone 8 owners spread across MacRumors, Apple’s official Communities support forum, Reddit and @applesupport being flooded with complaints on Twitter this seems optimistic. Especially considering the iPhone 8 has been on sale less than a week and far fewer have been sold than normal as fans patiently wait for the more ambitious iPhone X.
It is worth pointing out there are also complaints from affected iPhone 8 Plus users, but so far these appear to less frequent. This might be because of a component difference with the iPhone 8 or simply because fewer iPhone 8 Plus phones have been sold (there’s only $50 between a top tier iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X).
Apple amplified both new iPhones' speakers despite their water resistance
ApplePerhaps the best news, however, comes from reading between the lines in Apple’s statement. While affected users might wait a while, the fact Apple states the crackle will be fixed “in an upcoming software release” suggests this isn’t a hardware issue and a mass recall isn’t necessary. Then again this depends on how well the software fix does its job.
It’s also important affected iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus owners are vigilant. Apple boosted the external speakers on both new iPhones by 25% compared to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. If this was a factor in the fault and the upcoming iOS fix works by reducing their volume, then that’s not a satisfactory solution.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. As it stands the iPhone 8 and (possibly to a lesser extent) iPhone 8 Plus officially have a problem, but Apple deserves credit for stepping up and taking this on the chin. Now let’s see that fix ASAP.
